LIONS

News & Updates

On the evening of May 5, 2022an exciting event is happening at Lanham Christian school! Although this event is about two weeks away, it’s causing quite a stir. It’s the annual Lanham Christian School Banquet, coming back from a 2-year absence. It’s an event exclusive to high school students, so sadly, 8th graders, you guys have to wait another year to get in on the fun :). This event was planned by LCS’s Student Government and is mediated by Mr. Franco, the amazing Bible teacher. Although this is a school event, it is held at Newton White Mansion. Our theme this year is Magical Garden which would follow a floral theme, and the venue will be decorated accordingly by Mrs. Brown, an LCS teacher, and parent. About 60% of the high school student body is planning on attending the event and approximately 20% are bringing a date. Having a date, of course, is not mandatory, and it’s okay to just come with your friends to have a nice evening.

I conducted my interviews by going classroom to classroom asking the students that were going what they anticipate the most. Many said that they were excited to dress up, listen to good music, hang out with their friends, and the food. Students also suggested that they would like to have a slow dance, which is in the hands of the admin. Curiously, I asked the students that weren’t attending why they weren’t and I heard some very interesting answers. The concerns of one of the ninth graders were that they could not bring a guest. This year, only seniors were allowed to bring guests to the banquet which upset many juniors, sophomores, and freshman students. They said the ticket prices of seventy-five dollars a person are too high for one night. This is a valid complaint, but students should keep in mind that the school can’t just make money appear in thin air for events like these. The money for the banquet comes from the sales of the snack box. Though this may seem like a lot, the costs for the amazing food, decorations, photo booths, and other activities add up quickly. This also relates to why juniors, sophomores, and freshmen can’t bring guests. There simply isn’t enough room in the school’s banquet budget to do that.

Of course, only students who paid for tickets are allowed to attend, but I hope you stay tuned for other updates about the banquet. This is Dolcie Koroma, signing off
